As Christians, matters of spirituality and religious practice have personal significance to us. And we are not alone. 85% of Americans claim to believe in a higher power, yet only 35% say that they regularly attend religious services.
A deeper look at the ritualistic acts that occur among the familiar members of coffee shop congregations reveals that is not the case. We’ve observed a new religion characterized by daily devotions, strong brand loyalty, and a universal doctrine that exalts gourmet coffee while denouncing the consumption of less-than-premium beans.
Can these habits teach us something about worship, commitment, and our daily faith walk in a traditional religious context? Could we approach the practice of our religious beliefs as devotedly as we do the daily ritual of adding 1 oz half-and-half and two packets of Sugar in the Raw to our freshly ground Fair Trade coffee?
