As designers, we’re using art to

As Christians, matters of spirituality and religious practice have personal significance to us. And we are not alone. 85% of Americans claim to believe in a higher power, yet only 35% say that they regularly attend religious services.

This disconnection between affiliation and action piques our interest.
Is it because people dislike ritual? labels? rules?

A deeper look at the ritualistic acts that occur among the familiar members of coffee shop congregations reveals that is not the case. We’ve observed a new religion characterized by daily devotions, strong brand loyalty, and a universal doctrine that exalts gourmet coffee while denouncing the consumption of less-than-premium beans.

coffeeALTARnative challenges faithful coffee drinkers to reflect upon the religious nature of their actions and the object of their devotion.

Can these habits teach us something about worship, commitment, and our daily faith walk in a traditional religious context? Could we approach the practice of our religious beliefs as devotedly as we do the daily ritual of adding 1 oz half-and-half and two packets of Sugar in the Raw to our freshly ground Fair Trade coffee?
